The Philosophy of Hospitality
Southern Foodways, Preservation & Welcome
Hospitality is often mistaken for entertaining. We think it is something much deeper.
Hospitality begins long before guests arrive. It starts with thoughtful preparation, generous attention, beautiful surroundings, and the quiet decisions that help people feel they belong.
A pantry stocked with carefully chosen ingredients. A table laid before anyone knocks on the door. A pound cake on the sideboard, ready for guests who might stop by. Fresh flowers gathered that morning. A kitchen island where conversations naturally begin. A favourite chair in the garden.
These are not separate acts. Together they create a culture of welcome, a culture of hospitality.
At The Garden of Eva, we believe hospitality deserves to be studied as seriously as architecture, design, music, or cooking. It shapes homes, restaurants, hotels, gardens and communities. It influences how people gather, celebrate, grieve, remember and connect.
Our products are one expression of that philosophy, but they are not the whole story. Through essays, recipes, conversations, research and our Gathering Circle, we are exploring hospitality from many different perspectives. Chefs, designers, historians, gardeners, florists, artists, hoteliers and home cooks all have something to teach us about what makes people feel genuinely welcome.
This section of our website is an evolving body of work. Over time it will become a growing library of ideas about hospitality, Southern foodways, preservation, beauty, ritual, place and conversation. Some ideas are well developed. Others are still developing. We believe good thinking benefits from observation, reflection and dialogue.
Whether you arrived here looking for a recipe, a preserve, or a different way of thinking about hospitality, we're delighted you're here.
Welcome to the conversation!
